I painted this subject on a board prepared with a medium texture and a cerulean blue ground. I always use the smooth side of the board, which is prepared first with a coat of acrylic primer, and then with a coat of gesso primer and texture paste mixed together, usually in equal proportions. For trips to Cornwall, I know I will need a lot of these cerulean-wash boards – they suit the wonderful colour of the Cornish sea. Obviously for this type of painting the technique is mainly wet-into-wet, although also using paint with more body for the final highlights. In Rocky Headland near Porthcothan, North Cornwall, essentially the highlights are the white water of the breaking waves. To suggest these with some conviction, I worked with a feathery upward stroke of the brush.
